Since satellite internet’s bandwidth caps are frequently far smaller than those of standard ISPs-they are a big problem. According to a recent report from speed test provider Ookla, Starlink’s median download speeds reached 105 Mbps in the last quarter of 2021. Customers’ real access to Starlink internet may be slower or quicker than what is advertised. Starlink claims download speeds of 50 to 250 Mbps for its base plan, and for its premium plan, speeds of 150 to 500 Mbps. While most geostationary satellites that provide satellite internet services today orbit the earth at a distance of approximately 35,000 kilometers, Starlink is a constellation of many satellites that orbits the planet at a distance of just about 550 kilometers and serves the entire world. Starlink internet transmits data through the vacuum of space, where it travels relatively more quickly as compared to the fiber-optic cable and can reach a significantly greater number of people and places. But this will quickly spread over the entire world. The connection is currently only available in most of Europe, the northwest US, and some regions of South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
